My LASIK Surgery Experience: A Journey to Clear Vision

For years, I relied on glasses for my daily life. I was used to them in India, but after moving to Canada, I found it difficult to wear them during snow, as they would fog up. I always wished to have my eyesight corrected. I started exploring options in both Canada and India. Getting the surgery done in India was much more affordable than in Canada, so I decided to wait for my trip to India. Last month, I took a break to visit my family and friends and that’s when I scheduled an appointment for my LASIK surgery.

Why I chose LASIK

The decision to get LASIK wasn’t made overnight. I considered factors like convenience, long-term benefits and cost-effectiveness. The idea of being free from glasses and contacts was incredibly appealing and after confirming my eligibility through multiple consultations, I knew it was the right step. I had several consultations at The Eye Foundation and Sankara Eye Hospital in Coimbatore. After much consideration, I chose The Eye Foundation at R.S. Puram, Coimbatore.

The LASIK Procedure

Consultation

After reaching India, I booked an appointment for my LASIK consultation within a couple of days. My vision was tested and I had a few scans done to map my cornea. I was also tested for blood sugar, hepatitis and HIV. Once these tests were done, I consulted with the doctor, who briefed me about the surgery. He suggested two options for my cornea:

  1. Epi Contoura
  2. Femto Contoura

I chose Femto Contoura as the recovery period was shorter and the procedure was fully robotic, ensuring minimal discomfort.

Surgery

On the day of the surgery, First, my eyes were tested for dryness using a special clip and dryness paper. Then, the final cornea readings were taken. In the next 15 minutes, both my eyes were corrected and I was discharged.

Note: Take a sunglass with you for the surgery, as the hospital-provided ones were outdated.

Recovery and Post-Op Care

Immediately after the surgery, my vision was hazy and my eyes felt irritated as if I had rubbed onions into them. The first day was quite a struggle, but by the next day, I started noticing improvements.

First 24 Hours: No screen time and wearing protective shields while sleeping.

First Week: Regular eye drops to prevent dryness and infection. No face wash or hair wash.

With proper medication, my vision gradually returned to normal.

Cost Breakdown

₹ 5,000.00 - Initial lab test and X-Ray
₹ 1,10,000.00 -  Surgery
₹ 5,000.00 - Medication
₹ 1,20,000.00 - Total cost to Surgery

Life after LASIK

A week after the surgery, I had to travel back to Canada. To be honest, post-surgery medications and care were quite challenging. I still find it a bit difficult to focus on distant objects and experience slight light sensitivity. However, I see improvements every day. Now, with a clear vision, I can confidently say that the surgery has been a life-changing decision. If you’re considering LASIK, my advice is to research thoroughly, choose a trusted specialist and follow post-op care diligently. The first few days after surgery may be tough, but after a few weeks, it’s worth it!
